Global Standards FAQ

What is a good BMI?
For most adults, a BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered healthy by the WHO. However, thresholds differ by country: the WHO Asia-Pacific guideline (used in China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore) classifies BMI 23+ as overweight and 27.5+ as obese, because Asian populations develop health risks at lower BMI values. Japan uses 22 as the ideal BMI. In all countries, BMI does not account for muscle mass or body composition.
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Formula: F = (C x 9/5) + 32. Key reference points: 0 C = 32 F (freezing), 20 C = 68 F (room temperature), 37 C = 98.6 F (body temperature), 100 C = 212 F (boiling). Quick mental shortcut: double the Celsius temperature and add 30 (e.g., 20 C = 40+30 = 70 F, close to exact 68 F). Celsius is used by 195+ countries; Fahrenheit is official only in the US, Liberia, and Myanmar.
How much should I tip?
US: 18-22% expected at restaurants, 15% minimum. UK: 10-15% optional, often already included as a service charge. France: service charge (15%) is legally required on all restaurant bills — additional tipping is optional. Germany: rounding up is standard. Japan: tipping is not practiced and can be considered rude or embarrassing. Australia and New Zealand: tipping is rare — hospitality workers earn full minimum wage.
What is compound interest?
Compound interest is interest calculated on both the principal and previously earned interest. Formula: A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where P = principal, r = annual rate, n = compounds per year, t = years. Example: $10,000 at 5% annually for 10 years = $16,289 (simple interest would give $15,000). The US uses APY, UK uses AER, and EU uses EAER — all represent the same thing: effective annual return including compounding.
How much mortgage can I afford?
A common rule is the 28/36 rule: housing costs should not exceed 28% of gross monthly income, and total debt should not exceed 36%. However, this varies by country: UK lenders typically use 4-4.5x annual salary. Canada requires a stress test at contract rate + 2% or 5.25%. Australia uses a 3% buffer above the loan rate. In all countries, lenders consider debt-to-income ratio, credit score, and deposit size.
What is a good GPA?
In the US 4.0 system: 3.7-4.0 = A range (excellent), 3.0-3.7 = B range (good), 2.0-3.0 = C range (average). For graduate school, 3.0 (B) is typically the minimum. The UK uses degree classifications: First Class (70%+) is top, 2:1 (60-69%) is good, 2:2 (50-59%) is average. Germany inverts the scale: 1.0-1.5 is excellent, 4.0 is the minimum pass. Australia: High Distinction (85%+) is top, Distinction (75-84%) is good.
How do you calculate body fat percentage?
The most accessible method for most people is the US Navy method: for men, measure neck and waist; for women, measure neck, waist, and hips. The formula uses logarithms and gives an estimate within 3-4% of DEXA scan results. The US Navy standard for fitness is under 22% for men (under 26% at age 40+) and under 33% for women. Essential fat is 2-5% for men, 10-13% for women. Athletes typically have 6-13% (men) or 14-20% (women).
What is 20% of a number?
To calculate 20% of any number, multiply by 0.20 or divide by 5. Examples: 20% of $150 = $30. 20% of 80 = 16. Quick shortcut: find 10% (move decimal one place left), then double it. The formula for any percentage: X% of Y = (X / 100) x Y. This is used for discounts, tips (US standard is ~20%), and tax calculations worldwide.
