Frequently Asked Questions

What states have no sales tax in the US?

Five US states have no statewide sales tax: Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska (though some Alaskan municipalities charge local sales tax). California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%, with some local areas reaching 10.75%. The US has no national VAT, unlike every other major economy.

How does Canadian HST work?

Canada uses a combination of GST (5% federal) and provincial taxes. Some provinces have harmonized their sales tax into HST: Ontario (13%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland (15%), Nova Scotia (15%), PEI (15%). Other provinces charge GST + PST separately — for example, BC charges 5% GST + 7% PST = 12% total.

What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?

Sales tax (US): Applied once at the point of sale to the end consumer. VAT (used in UK, EU, Australia as GST, Canada as GST/HST): Applied at each stage of production, but businesses reclaim VAT on their purchases. The end consumer pays the same effective rate, but VAT is harder to evade and raises more revenue per percentage point than US-style sales tax.
