Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Chinese New Year fall on a different date each year?
Chinese New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar, which follows the cycles of both the Moon and the Sun. The date varies between January 21 and February 20 on the Gregorian calendar. 2025 is the Year of the Snake (Jan 29), 2026 is the Year of the Horse (Feb 17).
What is the difference between inclusive and exclusive day counting?
Exclusive counting (most common in English-speaking countries): if today is the 1st and the event is on the 10th, that is 9 days away. Inclusive counting: the same span is 10 days. Japanese legal periods use inclusive counting. Inclusive counting is also used in music: an octave covers 8 notes counting inclusively from C to C.
What calendar systems exist besides the Gregorian calendar?
The Hebrew calendar (lunisolar, 5785 in 2024-25), Islamic calendar (lunar, 1446 AH), Ethiopian calendar (13 months, ~7 years behind Gregorian), and the Hindu calendar (several regional variants) are all in active use. The Gregorian calendar is the international business standard.
