Frequently Asked Questions
Why does India have a half-hour offset (UTC+5:30)?
India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30, a 30-minute offset from neighbouring time zones. When India unified its time zones in 1947 after independence, a 5:30 offset was chosen as a compromise between the western and eastern parts of the country. Nepal goes one step further with UTC+5:45 — the only country with a 45-minute offset.
Which country spans the most time zones?
Russia spans 11 time zones (UTC+2 to UTC+12), the most of any country. The US spans 6 zones (UTC-10 to UTC-5), and Australia spans 3-5 zones depending on DST. France technically spans the most due to overseas territories — from UTC-10 (French Polynesia) to UTC+12 (Wallis and Futuna) — but these are all remote islands.
What is the International Date Line and does it affect world clock readings?
The International Date Line (IDL) runs roughly along the 180th meridian in the Pacific. Crossing it going west adds a calendar day; going east subtracts one. This means Auckland (UTC+12/13) and American Samoa (UTC-11) are separated by only ~3 hours of actual time but are on different calendar days. The world clock displays the local date in each city for this reason.
