Carpet Calculator
Calculate carpet area in square yards (US) or linear metres (UK/AU). Includes waste factor and pattern repeat loss — the two most common causes of under-ordering.
| Country | Sold In | Standard Roll Width | Underlay |
|---|---|---|---|

Frequently Asked Questions
How is carpet sold in the US vs UK?
In the US, carpet is sold by the square yard from 12-foot-wide rolls. You calculate ft² and divide by 9 for square yards. In the UK, carpet is sold by the linear metre from 4-metre-wide rolls — you're buying length, not area. A 5m × 4m room needs 5 linear metres of a 4m roll. The effective coverage is 5m × 4m = 20 m².
What is pattern repeat and how much extra should I add?
Pattern repeat is the distance until the design repeats itself. For a 64 cm repeat, each seam or join requires up to 64 cm of extra material for pattern matching. If you have 2 joins, that's up to 128 cm (1.28 m) extra. For plain or textured carpet with no pattern repeat, 5–10% waste is usually sufficient.
